When I first started coaching new moms several years ago, I was handing them meal plans and calorie/macros budgets and sending them off on their merry way for the week to follow it.
It seemed so simple. Eat the food, stay with the macros, see results.
But week after week, they just couldn’t stick to it. And if they could, they were losing motivation and willpower after just a few weeks.
It kind of blows my mind that I thought this would work, because at that point in my life, I knew better. After years of bouncing back and forth between being totally out of control with food and obsessively in control, I knew that at least for me, it just wasn’t that simple.
I knew that there were many, many layers that I had to explore for myself in order to finally be able to adhere to eating mostly healthy food, and to break out of the binge/restrict cycle.
I had discovered the concept of intuitive eating, and after watching my husband Tony heal his binge eating disorder by practicing it, started incorporating it into my own life.
But after working with these women, I discovered that 99% of them struggled with adhering to meal plans and calorie budgets for all the same reasons I did – it was flat out unsustainable and most of the time, mentally unhealthy.
This was a really bad combination for a new mom who was desperate for change and overwhelmed with responsibilities.
So about a year and a half ago, I restructured my entire program and began to coach intuitive eating to them instead.
Annnnd quickly discovered that teaching others intuitive eating is not quite so intuitive, and frankly, widely misunderstood.
So I had to develop my own system for eating that set my clients up for success, one that mimicked how I had woven intuitive eating into my life but also didn’t spend all day thinking about what to eat, or end up sitting around eating nothing but cereal all day long (although that wasn’t off the table completely, either).
I call this Intentional Eating, and it’s a system that prioritizes nutrition, energy management, and satisfaction so you feel free with food but also feel your best and create your healthiest, most sustainable outcome.
When incorporating this system into their daily lives, my clients started to not only heal their relationship with food and ditch the diet mindset, but began to effortlessly hit their naturally healthiest weight as a side effect.
Just like I was able to do.
I discuss this process in detail in episode 16 of the Fitness & Sushi podcast.
