I wanted to tell you about my client Joy, who came to me just after baby #3 was born.
After her first couple of pregnancies, Joy had used a calorie counting app to tirelessly track everything she ate. She lost weight both times, but was feeling daunted at the idea of being chained to a tracking app with three little ones. It had been a miserable experience for her.
During those times, she felt like a prisoner to calorie budgets, boring food, portion sizes, and daily punishing exercise in order to change her body after pregnancy. She was ready for something different, and after reading some of my work, she wanted to see if she could be “free” with food and have a better relationship with her body in the way she had seen me describe.
She was so ready for change that she didn’t really care whether my way “worked” or not, she just wanted some peace so she could enjoy her life as a mom!
My first mission with Joy was to train her to eat in a way that left her feeling great without tracking calories or giving up her favorite foods. This took so much patience and trust on her part, and I was so proud of how she stuck with it, even through the times it felt impossible or scary.
Then came her disbelief when even though she was allowing herself things that had previously been “off-limits” and not tracking every bite, her clothes started getting looser as she started to easily reach her naturally healthiest weight. And while it wasn’t super-fast like when she was chained to calorie apps or portion-size containers, it was TOTALLY sustainable and happy.
Eating was no longer a means to an end. She learned to take good care of her body while also participating in life – not stressing about food or obsessing over her body all day long.
In my programs we do things in this order:
- heal your relationship with food so you can break the destructive dieting patterns that keep you stuck and miserable
- heal your relationship with your body so you can stop self-sabatoging and learn what it’s asking of you
- learn to eat in the best style for YOU – the way that will make you healthy, energized, and also satisfied and able to sustain forever
- tweak for any fat loss desired
I know this is an unusual way to do things, but I learned a long time ago that I’m not the kind of woman who can BS you. I know that you could eat tiny portions of food out of containers that are unsatisfying and lose a bunch of weight. I know you could track every calorie and lose 2 lbs a week if you wanted.
BUT I also know that those actions have very real side effects that can last a lifetime – disordered eating patterns like the binge/restrict cycle, an unhealthy relationship with food that means you can’t walk into a party without obsessing over what is available or eating everything in sight.
In fact, de-programming you from those eating patterns like I did with Joy and hundreds of other women in my programs is now my specialty. It doesn’t take special food or macros to get you where you want to go. But it does take a certain mindset and some patterns you’ve picked up from the diet industry being broken.
My 1:1 coaching program has been my main program since 2015, but my business is changing rapidly. With more and more women seeking out a healthier, more positive way to approach their post-baby bodies, I’ve been focusing on growing programs that reach a larger audience and impact MORE women who desperately need this message.
Because of this, I’m going to be re-structuring my entire program soon and raising my 1:1 rates.
